Six seniors earn city scholarship
Six Brighton High School seniors received college scholarships Thursday through the city’s Youth in Government program. The six received their awards at a recognition dinner, attended by more than 50 people, at the Brighton Senior Center. Recipients and their scholarships were: Breann Fuller, $1,500 academic; Danielle Chaplin, $1,000 academic; Akeelah Harrell, $1,500 career advancement; Hannah Vaughn, $1,150 career advancement; Yazmin Torres, $1,000 career advancement; and Yesenia Gonzalez, $1,000 overall improvement. All six students participated in a monthlong program, during which they shadowed City Council members, city staffers or Fire District staff members to learn the operations and functions of city government. Students wrote essays and wereinterviewed to earn their scholarships, said a city news release. Chaplin shadowed City Manager John Bramble; Fuller shadowed Communications Coordinator Cathie Johnson; Gonzalez shadowed
Teri Sanchez; Harrell shadowed City Councilor Cynthia Martinez; Torres shadowed City Councilor Terry Moore; and Vaughn shadowed Recreation Supervisor Jeffrey Hulett. The $7,150 for this year’s scholarships was donated by American Pride Co-op, Carma Colorado, Carlson-Parkhill LLC, the city, Brighton Police/Galloway Fund, Bleeker and Vigesaa, Guaranty Bank and Trust, Metalwest, Platte Valley Medical Center, Union Colony Bank, United Power Valley Bank & Trust and Wells Fargo Bank.
